On Friday 11th December, Church End Brewery was the venue for one of the most eagerly anticipated sporting events since Bruno took on Tyson in 89'.
Two teams of players representing the 'Thursday Club' and 'Brewery Staff' went head to head over two hours in what one witness described as 'some of the most extraordinary darts i've ever seen'. The atmosphere was electric and the playing area was crammed with eager competitors and onlookers, desperate to catch a glimpse of some 'top quality arrows'.

After a quick adjustment to an overlength oche the game was afoot. Thursday Club raced to an early lead with some accurate throwing and some rather inaccurate subtraction. The brewery echoed to the sounds of sledging and the gentle thud of arrow against board. Against this backdrop, and under immense pressure, Brewery Staff did well to hold their nerve and pulled level on games won just before luncheon. After beer and sandwiches were consumed (many thanks must go to Katie Elliott for these) the competition commenced once more.

Church End took advantage of some post dinner sluggishness on the part of Thursday Club to 'put a little daylight' between themselves and their guests but sadly they failed to press home their advantage. Taking their 'eyes of their arrows' for a mere few minutes to visit the bar enabled Thursday Club to race into the lead with some superb arrows and not a hint of dubious mathematics in sight. Defeat loomed for Church End and with nothing to lose except for tattered dignity and pride, they resorted to adjusting the score sheets while no one was looking!

This skulduggery was swiftly detected and Thursday Club retaliated by racing ahead with some ruthless finishing and when the regulation two hours were up....Thursday Club were deserved winners. For the losers, nothing but shame, humiliation and the bar to elaborate on some titanic performances. And the winners, well they received a magnificent prize, in keeping with such a tremendous sporting spectacle. Their trophy will soon be visible from the bar so keep your eyes peeled .
